This week’s worst political development is the fact that Texas elected TED CRUZ for another term as Senator instead of Beto O’Rourke (58.9%- 48.3%). As you might have guessed from my choice of title, I don’t like Cruz at all and I’m therefore baffled by Texas’ decision.

In a nutshell, his views on important matters are regressive and dangerous. I’m just going to pick a few of his stances (as per ontheissues.org) and explain why I feel this way:
- Death penalty for killing police officers. (Sep 2015)
- I understand that the sentiment here is founded upon support for people who work in law enforcement. I feel that there are indeed officers who join this line of work out of a sense of duty and are truly brave and respectable in doing so; however, there are also those who are not so principled. Law enforcement as a whole is not immune to the abuse of power– there are officers who regularly abuse their power, and in extreme cases, they abuse their power at the cost of an innocent person’s life. With this in mind, I fail to see how one could make a blanket statement advocating the death penalty to anyone who kills an officer. I think the situation is far too nuanced for a stance like that (in cases of self defense) and honestly, where is his outrage towards officers who kill innocent citizens?
- ICE performs vital functions that protect American families. (Jul 2018)
- ICE rips families apart and has dealt severe emotional trauma to hundreds of undeserving children and parents. I’m disgusted by the way we have treated Mexicans who have fled their country to live a better and safer life and I’m ashamed that the U.S. of all countries is this harsh on immigrants. The irony runs deep here.
- Pray against a court decision legalizing same-sex marriage. (Apr 2015)
- First of all, there is a separation of church and state for a reason. While I do find that there is a valuable relationship between religion and politics in which religion often influences politics to operate under a moral imperative, I think that this sort of political application of religion is narrow and encroaches upon rights that all citizens are entitled to. It is a shame to me that Cruz is given the means to push his naive religious interpretations onto people who just want equality.
I could go on, but I also want to touch upon just how ridiculous Ted Cruz is as a person.

I say this only because of how socially inept he is (which this article speaks to in a very mean way that I don’t endorse but also can’t not laugh at), which might not be fair but given his political views I’m not gonna lose sleep over it.
Moreover, I thought Beto O’Rourke was a really thoughtful and inspiring candidate and I would have loved to see what he could have done for Texas. He caught my eye with his answer to a town hall question about NFL protests that is worth the watch:
Nice job going with the Zodiac Killer, Texas.

Good representation of everything 🙂 You make me proud! RT if you ❤ Beto! It's crazy how the first picture is actually a reality… I love still living in the mid-twentieth century! Overall, Cruz plays into the meme politics which is definitely something that America needs to GET TF AWAY FROM AND TAKE OUR GOVERNMENT SERIOUSLY. xoxo

I agree with every single point you made in your post!! Beto could have done so much for Texas, and yet I can’t believe Cruz was elected. Beto’s answer to the question about NFL protests was spot-on. Also, it’s crazy how close the poll results were. It goes to show that every vote counts!

Hahahaha this cracked me up this week. Ted Cruz honestly gives me nightmares from his political views and agenda to the way his face just looks (I know its mean but whatever). Every week you’re so good at explaining things that the class may not be extremely informed on which is great. Beto could have been a game changer for texas and america as a whole and I was so upset when I heard that he’d lost to Ted freaking Cruz but also not completely shocked at the same time (after all, it is Texas). But great job nush!
